Verona, Italy
Founded in 1878 by Pompilio Biscardo great-grandfather of Nicola Biscardo, 4th generation and today's owner. 17 acres in the village of Prun at 2,200 feet asl in the heart of the Classico area and other 20 acres in Mezzane di Sotto at 850 feet asl just outside the Classico area. Both villages are located in Valpolicella, few miles away from Verona, the romantic city of Romeo and Juliet. The Biscardo family has always been focused on indigenous grapes such as Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, Molinara, Oseletta and Dindarella, to provide the most authentic and "appellation friendly" wines possible. The characteristic of Prun is the very high elevation, granting a drastic temperature drop between day and night, combined with a unique composition of the soil composed primarily by a particular stone called indeed "pietra di Prun" (stone from Prun). Below the first 5 feet of dirt, you find immediately a base of "pietra di Prun" that has been caved in this area for centuries to build houses, roofs, roads and the very same terraces where the vineyards are grown. This particular terroir provides the wines with unparalleled body structure, complexity and longevity. The theme of Valpolicella is the famous “Appassimento” method that consist in drying the grapes on straw matts for several months before making the wine, thus achieving the unique style and flavors typical of this valley. "The most representative wine from Valpolicella is by far the Amarone, because it combines the elegance, the grace and kindness of Juliet with the body structure, the muscles and the temper of Romeo!” Nicola says.
